Adjusting Double Swing Gates: A Practical Guide

Double swing gates offer a classic look. They can enhance the beauty of any property. However, ground movement can cause problems. Over time, the gate posts may start leaning. This misalignment can lead to various issues. Lets see how adjusting of the swing gate can be done practically.

The Problem with Leaning Posts

When the posts lean, the gates may not match. Sometimes, the gates rub against the ground. This rubbing can damage the motor and other components. Additionally, misalignment can change the initial geometry of the installation. As a result, the gates may not open or close fully. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep the gate leaves straight.

Understanding Gate Geometry

If the posts lean, you usually cannot straighten them. They are often attached to a concrete slab underground. The only solution is to adjust the gate hinges. I have previously explained how to adjust wooden gate hinges when the post leans in the plane of the gate. But what happens if the post leans perpendicularly to the plane of the gates?

Moving the Hinge on the Post

In cases where the post leans perpendicularly, you need to move the hinge on the post. While adjusting, one important observation stands out. If the leaves align at the bottom but diverge at the top by a distance A, do not move the hinge the full distance A. Instead, move it approximately half of that distance. This method helps maintain proper alignment.

Marking the New Hinge Position

To mark the new position of the hinge, first unbolt the top hinge you want to adjust. Align the leaves relative to each other. After aligning, mark the new position of the hinge on the post. This careful approach ensures accuracy and helps avoid further misalignment.

Securing the Gate During Adjustment

While you adjust the hinges, the gate will rest on the bottom hinge. It may also be supported by the motor. To secure the top of the gate, use straps or ropes. This will prevent the gate from moving during the adjusting double swing gates process.

Drilling and Installing the New Hinge

Once you have marked the new position, drill a new hole at that point. Screw in the post part of the hinge into the newly drilled hole. Make sure it is secure. After securing the hinge, hang the corresponding part of the hinge on the hook (pin). Finally, bolt it to the gate leaf. This step completes the adjustment process.
